Frequenlty Asked Questions

Poured concrete is great at taking compression loads just not as great at taking tensile loads. For example concrete makes excellent footings for decks. Poured concrete is also great for foundation walls. The walls will surely develop cracks but usually that is acceptable for a basement. And when it is not acceptable such as in a finished basement the walls are covered up anyway.

What it is not good at is being poured 4″ thick and being driven on. It’s not that you can’t do it, it’s just next to impossible to stop it from developing cracks. Have you ever heard of the saying – “Step on a crack – break your mothers’ back”. Try walking down a sidewalk and not seeing a crack.

Pavers on the other hand have gone a long way and have many different styles and colors to accommodate anyone and are also good at being low maintenance – just a few cleanings a year with a blower will keep them looking great! And by the way properly installed pavers will not have weeds growing through them, Also if a section of pavers is to ever settle it is easy enough to pop the section out, add a bit of sand re-install the pavers and sweep some sand in the joints and it is as good as new.

In most situations, Retaining walls can be built three to four feet tall without engineering or soil reinforcement and can be built to any required height with proper engineering and soil reinforcement. Factors such as wall height and soil loads should be carefully considered before determining how you construct your wall.

Segmental Retaining Wall Block

Segmental Retaining Walls can be built of various concrete blocks. Some systems are designed so that the blocks interlock with each other – which provides a mortar-less solution. Segmental Retaining Walls rely on gravity and the blocks are designed to gradually step back into the earth they retain, to provide more strength. There is a huge variety of concrete blocks available, so you can choose are cleaner or a rather weathered look. Most systems allow the integration of curves, corners and stairs, and the blocks can be split to fit the shape of the project.

Natural Stone

Traditional stone retaining walls can be beautiful and have a very natural look but can cost a bit more than a segmented retaining block wall. Natural stonewalls are very labor intensive, building natural stone walls has become a lost art and is hard to find professionals that still practice the trade. You cannot beat the look of it.

Sealing your pavers is the best way to maintain that new look to your driveways, patios and walkway. The finishes from sealing vary from invisible to glossy, so whatever look you desire you can achieve it with a sealer. Sealing your pavers helps to promote durability, longevity, and the overall aesthetic beauty of your paved areas.
